Political beings. Lost ethics of political involvement.

Few years ago, when my dear grandfather was still alive with relief he proclaimed racism and xenophoby to be finally dead. He said, with true conviction, that such hatred had its roots in people's ignorance and simple lack of education, and will never find the place in modern world where people travel and have first-hand experiences with other cultures. Unfortunately for my late grandfather, with the whole love and respect I cultivate for him, I have to admit he could have not been more mistaken.

It is worth saying that the world my grandfather remembered, with all its possible cruelty and divisions, was the world which more than anything valued education. Although it was an often biased education, vastly preaching injustice and white supremacy, it also opened the door to the old science of ethics and philosophy, encouraging the whole generation to rebel and stand up against what they once learned. It is no wonder that for a person of such background it was difficult to accept the values of the new world, where science and philosophy have been successfully replaced by politics. One can argue that the renaissance of the old Greek term of polis reflects the awakening interests of individuals in public life and brings up private units to the true engagement in social change. It might have been long obvious that politics, no matter how distant they appear from the daily lives of the commoners, has direct influence on the course of our destinies, as unveiled by author Milan Kundera, who often presented his characters as heroes of their own 'small histories', sooner or later interrupted by the 'great history', which has no consideration for individual's agenda. Nevertheless, the opportunities to connect with different platforms of experiences and opinions, have led us to a live confrontation with such matter, making us not only feel swallowed up by a global machine of world's political systems, but also aware of the benefits we might draw from it as vital parts of those systems. It would be too much of a conclusion to say that the Internet bears sole responsibility for the expansion of our private matters onto a global platform, especially after decades of the modern world driven by the idea of political and systematical unity, but the accessibility of mass media is, at  least partially, certainly to blame. Never before an entity had so much connection with decisive process of political order of the world as it has nowadays. Even if such connection in reality remains only an illusion, it is still enough to give another dimension to the political side of our lives. The accessibility of opinion-sharing plaforms and switch from private to social are essential agents in shaping whole new range of definitions of qualities until now existing only within comfort zone of the individual, juxtaposing our systems of beliefs next to the global political system, which for a private entity becomes nothing else but a ladder.
I am straying from open evaluation whether the globalization of our private lives is right or wrong for humanity (this is a job for ethics, sociologists and media experts and I am neither), but I stretch that it brings a whole new quality of political activism and exposes us to social involvement in a way we have never experienced it before. Especially that wide spread politicization of our private matters corresponds with underlying needs of millennials- our ancestors vastly had opportunity to gain first hand experience of the 'great history', by fighting the wars and engaging in revolutions, while our generation has been long forced to accept the role of the history mostly through struggle with economical crisis and instability. Modern media, being so easily within reach, brought us opportunity to have our piece of cake of the real force driving the world, even only by sharing our opinion on social media, which replaced the famous spot in Hyde Park. But even if we can envy our ancestors their vital involvement in shaping world's history, in reality they remained mere participants of the events determined by real players. For us, unjustly treated and forgotten by the great mother history, it is a matter of standing face to face with our new god- the mighty order, the Olympus of decision making, offering us a principle role in the process, and fulfilling such role is another step on the ladder. The milestones of our lives no longer stand for private achievements, as the meaning of the individual is strongly connected with their position in global political order. Hence the politicization of our beliefs and terms, which in a private space might be seen as universal.

Once the global politics start driving our life through a promise of social advancement, temptation of catching a finger of the 'great history' replaces the value of retriving to a personal space and political dictionary is being adopted in place of terms describing individual freedoms and beliefs. Revealing our private persona requires political statement and creates definition, which further exists to be associated with sub-terms and sub-definitions, to later contribute to a creation of new, political being which is meant to maintain their integrity while living within reality of chants, statements and slogans. (At that point I start wondering if being an anarchist does not stand in conflict with living in Islington.) Such political creature will now measure their value against other creations, to whom they apply other qualities and definitions approved by global political system. These qualities are based on certain criteria agreed by the sides of the system: personal documents of the individual, educational and ethnic background as well as material status. Based on that criteria, political beings are divided into teams, where the strongest team will defend the global system which allows them to proceed further up the ladder. The engagement in system soon will create strong sense of 'us' against 'them'- enemies of the system, which by now has already replaced the system of beliefs. This kind of division is nothing new: in past it had successfully evolved into slavery, apartheid and Holocaust to name the few and has been widely practised during colonialism and civil wars across centuries. The modern engagement in political system is different because the globalization of our lives gives us the illusion of participation in creative process and, maybe first of all, the illusion of choice. Staying connected and having the opportunity to see contemporary political agenda from different angles brings us to the point when we choose to participate in the system in exchange for the benefits it proposes, which seem to be rightly deserved by someone who remains a faightful participant of the global system and, as it seems, actively helps shaping it. A political being, once convinced they form the part of the strongest team, is no longer bothered to rewrite once accepted categories. They will continue climb the social ladder, empowered by empty terms from political dictionary, which are telling them that it is exactly what they deserve. And that is why my poor grandfather was so wrong.

The Worst Marketer in the World. Confessions of a Decent Consumer.

 Mr Frank, I got annoyed.
-Mmm..- answered Frank rushing out from the bathroom, still with a toothbrush in his mouth.
No, not because of that- explained I, despite the fact that Frank still hasn't suggested anything as far.- It's because of soething which happened in January. Anyway, let me tell you the story.

I was sitting on a tube holding my treasure like I was expecting in any minute someone to come for it. Someone to unmask me, betray me and leave me with a theatrical stiletto inside my heart. I holt my purse tightly, trying to hide any presence of my little precious things wrapped in a Boot's bag. I closed my eyes and tried to pretend that it didn't happen. I hadn't just bought Aussie. The adverts on a tube were not for me and I was totally immuned to all this marvellous, high quality pictures and encouraging quotes surrounding me in public spaces. But no matter how I tried it was a fact: both shampoo and conditioner from Aussie line Volume were just there, in my hands. Trying to erase the feeling of guilt from inside my chest I got home and decided to try the treasure. All of the marketing love hate issues have gone: it was one of the best conditioner I ever had.

-Mmm- Frank made a significant movement with his head towards me- what's the conclusion?
He was still holding a handtowell with both hands in a tight embrace.
-Oh Frank, sometimes you stop being an imaginary counsellor and you start to be just a man!
Then I had to explain him the actual story. The most current story ever, nothing else but First Kiss. First Kiss was a video which in the past several days went viral on the Internet. As one of the first people who shared it amongst my friends, I had some information from beforehand. I knew it was sponsored by some clothing brand, anyway no one, neither the director neither Soko, an artist who played the role of one of the strangers and whose song was used in a background, ever tried to hide it. Probably unlike hundreds of haters across the Internet they simply didn't see anything bad about it. Neither did I.

And maybe that is why soon I found myself left alone in the arms of Monkey Seduction and wondering: what's the difference between me and the rest of the world?

What is Sexy?

Although this title might be confusing, no, I don't mean to talk about any new trends or what do guys (or girls) like nowadays. I actually want to ask all of you a question: What does it mean?
I remember few years back when I accidentally watched an interview with somewhat famous model. While talking about cosmetics from time to time she was using a line 'very sexy'. I was watching her face trying to understand what does 'sexy' mean regarding cosmetics and what does she like so much about them. Are they just hot or trendy? But the model herself seemed confused and I found her feeling quite uncomfortable saying loud such a phrase. Then I realized that 'very sexy' was a name of a brand she was supposed to promote... And then both of us, me and the model, felt apparently awkward.
Back then I had no clue that one day 'sexy' would become one of the most present words in my reality. I hear this word approximately three times per day (and I don't watch TV), constantly failing to understand a phenomenon of it.
My personal challenge with a word 'sexy' is its' such a close relation with visual aspects. Recently I was passing Sainsbury's in Kilburn, going to a brunch at my friends' place when some guy smiled at me and all of a sudden screamed: 'Hey girl, smile, it's a beautiful day and you're sexy'. I perceived it as quite nice just as nice can be receiving a compliment from a stranger. But then a strange shadow of thought has passed through my mind: 'What did he actually mean?' He probably found me attractive. But he didn't shout 'you're attractive' (and I rarely hear that word at all). He didn't say 'you're pretty' wich could be actually more appropriate to be said to a stranger. Since that the word 'sexy' has been buzzing in my head- and I felt the same awkwardness that I had felt back then, watching the interview with a model. Something wasn't quite right about it.
For over the past three years I can barely remind any other compliment I received than 'sexy'. And that is from people including my boss and even my mather.

Blue Blue Blue Canary- Slava's Snow Show

I have something to admit- I am a terrible reviewer. But I have something amazing over here to review and since all of the good reviewers I know are on holidays, I do not have any other option like take over this role. I am not doing it for Slava Polunin (even his ethnic origin makes me squeeking with pride) neither for Southbank Centre who offered Londoners an opportunity to join this miracle on stage. I am doing it for everybody who would love to become a part of magic but doesn't have money for that. Exactly, as I said, I am a terrible reviewer.
In his Snow Show Slava Polunin takes us to the Winter Wonderland. The real one, not the one in Hyde Park.
The whole idea bought me completely in the first minute: it started with 'La petite fille de la mere' of Vangelis- enough to amaze me. Because indeed, Slava's Snowshow is nothing like a feast of great music, picturesque sceneries and experience of a touchable magic. It moves all the senses delivering a sudden step to another side of the mirror. It is a show for everybody- but mostly for those who like to immerse, those who like to read a book feeling how does it sound and smell, for those who while being kids used to dream about entering into the earth. At once, it gives you all that.

The 'L' word. No, this is not what you think.

H like Hesitating is pouring down. -That's what I thought on one lazy day in the beginning of February. The kitchen seemed to immerse in the darkness, winking with a weakening light above the dirty sink, while the hidden behind the windows space outside continued swinging the universe with persistent whistling. Maybe this is the matter of lifestyle. At least that's the argument you always hear from your parents when you gamble away fifty quit, suddenly wake up in Exeter after the week-long party in Leeds or accidentally get pregnant. Or something just as serious, for your parents of course, like getting a terrible cold or feeling low after breaking up with your part-time Latinamerican boyfriend who works at the roaming circus.
Mind my sarcastic language but I swear, honestly, I would have never touched 'Lifestyle issue' if only popularity of this word recently hadn't killed the idea. If there is the thesis, has to be the question: what is this idea?

The idea of the 'L word' has actually it's roots in democracy. It reminds us of a time when society allowed us to live how we want, not providing for us any ready patterns to fit in. The idea of a 'lifestyle' is supposed to give you freedom- the right to live in any world you like, even if it's an imaginary one. And here's a problem: it completely doesn't.

THE GUY I LIVED WITH

- Can you hear me?- I heard my voice cutting the air in the unusually squeaky silence.
The Guy I Lived With slowly turned his face into my direction and I realized that I had never seen such an expression on his face.
- Did you eat something?
- Did you possibly see... a ghost?
Then the silence got quickly interrupted by sudden laughter above our heads.
- Yes, I knew we know each other!- screamed THAT PERSON putting her hands together in the superficial gesture. Her voice sounded like a bird and I never trust people who sound like birds, so this time I decided to take all the way the side of The Guy I Lived With (usually I do opposite).
After the birdy left, sharing with us before couple of cliches and leaving half cuppa, I looked at his face with expectation. That was one of only several times for all this time I knew him when he blew.
Why do you hate that lady?
-Did I say I hate her, I didn't say I hate her, I never said I hate her, it's not even that I don't like her.. I just can't stand her, can't stand her, I don't want her in this house ever again, she has a different lifestyle!
That was this moment. The first time I realized what a big issue was a 'lifestyle'. Lifestyle was the only explanation The Guy I Lived With could ever get from her. Since that moment, the word stayed in my mind, as something sadly final and undeniably sarcastic.

WHAT WOULD YOUR FAVOURITE BLOGGER SAY

Probably something in contrary. The 'Lifestyle' is the most desired category to read about, to work with it, to deliver it. I have gone through several 'lifestyle' blogs and as you know, I have this category as well. I could say it's for SEO but the truth is that the 'lifestyle' comes out everytime when you have no words. Just say it. There is no such a thing in any reasonable description.

I follow you -Fighting a dragon in the time of nowadays

A year ago I created a blog. It was a life changing decision. I had two main reasons to do that: first of all, I wanted to improve my written English. And I wanted to write. Both aims have been reached.
Recently I heard that it's Google Analytics I should listen to. According to me, everything is fine - I write. You read me. According to the Dragon, I have only few followers. And to make it worse, they are all humans. Therefore I would like to set up one thing- I am a writer. I write, I don't advertise thigths. I don't sell discounts for a trip around Cheshire and don't give away vouchers for chops and chips at Sophie's Bar. My grandfather always said that writing is a craft. And he never heard about Search Engine Optimization. So, if you still feel like following, you are more than welcome to follow. Deep see baby.
Before I came to this country I never heard about SEO. (And I am almost seventy years younger than my grandfather.) At my teenage times Internet was defined as a box somehow connected to the telephone line and everybody in the village was pissed off because after eight you couldn't reach anyone. There was a website which had a chat option so you could connect with people in a neighbour town, which was incredibly exciting. Possibility of using Internet the way I use it now then would have probably been a science fiction movie for me. And in the past months I am wondering if back then I was not closer to the truth then now.
Who are SEO experts? They are a patron saint of contemporary writers. They fight with a dragon of nowadays: Google. The Dragon is a machine so, according to the theory of evolution, is an absolute lord. Of words, ideas, theories, moves, clicks, squeeks, apftzzhh and completely accidental barks. The problem is that he can't see any difference between them. Because the Dragon, no matter how many poems we will write for him, doesn't have a brain.

God Save My Shoes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Dk66xz8te0

Which one of us, women, doesn't love them? High heels, ballerinas and much more types of shoes, all heroes of our dreams all the way! I have a friend who is addicted to buying shoes- once I visited her I had to make some shopping for her. Her fridge was totally empty as she spent all of her money for next three pairs of shoes!
The  creators of 'God Save my Shoes' try to explain the phenomenon of shoes. They interview celebrities and the most powerful people in shoe business. I love the line that women have a relationship with their shoes- that's exactly the way I feel.
Some people blame shoes for developing of shopaholism. It definitely makes a point due to the amazing philosophy which grew around shoes over centuries. Nobody knows when did it start, but we can't blame Manolo Blahnik more than old Chinese celebration of women's feet, as well as we can't blame Hollywood movies more than old romances, where woman's foot was a symbol of sex-appeal.
I could probably blame my grandmother who had a different pair of shoes to every clothing set and a special closet for shoes. But there's one line in this movie I really like and I think that's it: we can only blame the way it makes us FEEL. It's the way it makes us feel which makes shoe business a real art branch with a psychological flavour. 'God Save my Shoes' is not going to bring us an explanation of shoes' role in the world. It will take us into an another world. The one we like more than wonderland- the shoeland.
